Saturday, February 24, 6 PM at the Oklahoma History Center

After another year marked by growth, we’re excited to say that 2018’s Gala Celebration “A Night with Ralph Ellison” is shaping up to be our best one yet!

We'll look forward to raising a glass with you on the evening of Saturday, February 24 from 6:00-9:00 PM at the Oklahoma History Center. (800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive, Oklahoma City, OK 73105). We’re sorry, but due to high demand, tickets at both the regular and VIP levels are now sold out. If you couldn’t join us this time, we’ll hope to see you next year!

Our Gala will feature a three-course dinner with wine in the Oklahoma History Center's scenic Devon Great Hall as well as a full performance slate of music, literary readings, and dance for your entertainment. Speakers and presentations throughout the evening will highlight the Foundation’s development of projects and outreach efforts designed to honor Mr. Ellison and enhance our city’s multicultural landscape in the areas of education, community development, artistic programming, and the pursuit of positive social change.

Specific performers featured in our program include

  • poet Quraysh Ali Lansana reading a selection from his work
  • performances by UCO’s Kaleidoscope Dance Company under the direction of Tina Kambour as well as dancers under the direction of Derrick Minter, teaching artist with the Alvin AIley Dance Foundation
  • music courtesy of the Classen School of Advanced Studies Jazz Band under the direction of Reginald Irons
  • a dramatic reading from Ellison’s work by orator Steven Oliven

In addition, we will present our Shadow and Act Awards to two Oklahoma presences whose work testifies to the values of Ralph Ellison’s legacy in our own time. There will be so much to celebrate on this special evening, scheduled annually on the last Saturday in February to commemorate Ellison’s birthday on the first of March.

VIP-level tickets include access to a special reception at 5 PM on the second floor of the History Center featuring a free wine bar and hors d’oeuvres, music by the Justin Echols Jazz Trio, as well as a meet-and-greet with our Shadow and Act Award winners and members of our Executive Board.

We’re excited to see you there! We’re so eager to share our work and vision with you as we grow our organization and look into the future in Ellison’s spirit together. We think 2018 is already shaping up to be a year filled with blessings, enlightenment, and mutual discovery as we strive to walk further along the Ellisonian path with you in the great state of Oklahoma.
